  • City Dump
Peru has no city dump allowing everything; however, there is a brush pile for disposal of brush, leaves and clean lumber, and a whitegoods pile for disposal of refrigerators, metal, and the like. The brush pile is open 24/7 and is located on the north side of the river road, approximately 1 mile from town. To access it, turn east off of 5th street at the north end of town one block north of City Hall. Only brush, clean lumber and leaves removed from plastic bags are allowed. Leaves should be dumped in a separate pile from brush/lumber. The dump does not allow disposal of lumber containing nails, glass, etc. The white goods pile is located just south and slightly west of Mount Vernon Cemetary on the south side of the road. A sign on the gate gives specific regulations on what can be dumped. TV's and other electronics and home furnishings are not allowed - items such as grills, appliances, and old metal swingsets, are. If in doubt, contact City Hall at 402-402-872-6685 to ask.
  • Elections & Voting
Elections in Peru are held every two years. The Primary Election is held the 2nd Tuesday in May and the General Election is held the 1st Tuesday in November. The Mayor and Council serve a 4 year term, with Council alternating every two years. For more information about voting and the election process in Nemaha County, please contact the County Clerk's Office at 402-274-4213.

  • Water
The City of Peru provides water to their residents from a ground well. We currently have one well, which will serve the community until a permanent connection to Auburn water occurs in late spring or fall of 2023. With Peru being located in the Missouri River basin, we naturally have high iron and manganese in our water. Peru contracts with Auburn Board of Public Works to operate our temporary plant and successfully treat these issues. Peru does not add fluoride to their drinking water. If you ever have water issues or concerns, please contact the City Office at 402-872-6685.
  • Cemetery and Funerals
Mount Vernon Cemetery is managed by the local Cemetery Board. Contact Shirley Robbins, 402-274-8176, for information on purchasing a burial plot, and Theresa Westfall, to arrange a funeral meal. Contact Phil Wemhoff, cemetery caretaker, for upkeep concerns: 402-274-8741. • Animal Licensing
The City of Peru requires all residents, including college students to license their pets. Ordinance 2023-14 requires owners of a dog or cat over the age of 6 months, within 30 days of acquisition of the dog or cat to acquire a license for the animal yearly by or before January 1st of each year. The license taxes and fees for a spayed or neutered dog or cat totals $5 per animal. The license and fees for a intact dog or cat totals $20 per animal. Please license your dog or cat by January 31st each year to avoid a $5 per animal late fee. At the time of licensing, proof of sex for each dog or cat must be included with a current certificate of rabies vaccination, before a license shall be issued. The license will include a metal tag, this tag and the rabies tag must be properly attached to the collar or harness of the dog or cat and is valid until December 31st of the year issued. A copy of the license form can be obtained at City Hall or can be downloaded below. If you are a landlord and you know a tenant has a pet, please make sure they are aware of the ordinance and how important licensing is, not only for the protection of the public, but also the well-being of their pet. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the City Office or the Animal Humanity and Control Committee. Contact the City Office at 614 5th Street, Peru, NE 68421, 402-872-6685, cityclerkcityofperu@gmail.com
  • Rent City Hall

City hall rental is free for 501(c)(3) organizations, $40 for non-profit groups, and $60 for profit groups. Contact the city clerk for a City Hall rental form to request the space and check the calendar. The form will provide a space to request the appropriate number of chairs and tables in your desired configuration indoors, and to reserve the appropriate number of trash containers, etc. if you are using the outside space as well. Request forms can be found below, and can be submitted to cityclerkcityofperu@gmail.com To request a street closure for an event, you will need to speak with the clerk and have your request placed on the City Council agenda.
